30 Before 30 List

Today I turned 29, and I'm kind of struggling with it. This is the first birthday I've actually dreaded. What's weird is that I'm not exactly sure why. To help me deal and make the last year of my 20's count, I've created a "30 Before 30" list. Some of these things I've done before, and some I haven't. Some are within my comfort zone, and others are way out of it. Some are specific goals, others are more general. The goal is to push myself and complete them all before my 30th birthday next year. They're all reasonable, budget friendly ideas, and I'm determined to cross them all off! :) So, here they are:

Running Revelations - No Excuses


During the day, I work as a social media specialist for a liquor company. Throughout the year, we're allowed to partake in various seminars related to specific alcohols - last month I attended one about tequila. Today, it was sparkling wine. We tried about 13 different kinds of wine, so as you can imagine, I was feeling pretty good by the end of the seminar (as were my co-workers). We decided to keep the happy feelings going and go out for happy hour.


Now, Tuesdays and Thursdays are my running days during the week. I missed Tuesday due to visiting a friend who just had a baby, so I was already feeling a little guilty about missing a run (although once I saw sweet baby, running was pretty far from my mind). I was looking forward to running today, but then happy hour happened. Which was completely fine - I really enjoyed myself, and hanging out with coworkers outside of the office is always fun.

As I was heading home though, I started thinking about how I was going to make up my missed run. Should I go before or after work tomorrow? Should I go tonight even though I just drank two glasses of wine and lots of delicious food? But I reeeeeally don't feel like going tonight.

What I realized, is that running can't become a priority if you don't make it one. So, I sucked it up and here I am at the gym at 8:30 p.m., running 4 miles, feeling pretty crappy. But you know what I won't feel crappy about tomorrow? Missing this run :)

Beat The Blerch

Most of you know that Tom and I are training for a 1/2 marathon. The race is called Beat The Blerch, and comedic illustrator extraordinaire The Oatmeal is putting it on. He's written some pretty hilarious comics, my personal favorites being "My Dog: the Paradox," and "The Terrible and Wonderful Reasons Why I Run Long Distances." We decided to do this 1/2 marathon partly because we both love The Oatmeal, but also because it's about 30 miles from Seattle, WA so we're making a long weekend trip out of it. Another reason is it's the kind of race with "large quantities of birthday cake at every aid station, in addition to Nutella and magical grape beverages." Haha!
