Mini Project Weekend

With Tom's help, I was able to finish a few mini projects that have been on my to-do list for a while. First, a simple shelf hung in the kitchen. A couple of weekends ago, I met up with some friends for a day of wine tasting and thrift shopping. I found this cute little owl potpourri holder for $4, and easily turned it into a cork holder. Also on the shelf is a treasured cookbook from 1938 that I found at Cran Fest, and Red Owl spice tins.

These are a few of my favorite {fall} things

Cooler weather
Cozy sweaters
Cute boots
Hot cocoa
 Apple picking
 Leaves changing
 Pumpkin flavored everything

Fall is by far my favorite time of year. It's that perfect in-between season where we've left the miserably hot weather behind, but haven't quite reached the miserably cold. It's a season where apples and pumpkins are in bountiful supply, and Pinterest pages are overflowing with delightful baked goods. I love all that fall has to offer, especially corporate America's exploitation of "seasonal offers." I'm not going to lie, I almost drove off the road when I heard that pumpkin was back at Caribou. And pumpkin spice oatmeal pancakes at Perkins? Forget about it!

While restaurants pull out all the stops when it comes to fall goodies, there's nothing quite like homemade treats. In the coming weeks, I'm excited to share some of my old {and new!} fall favorites with you :)

{warning: images may cause hunger!}

Pumpkin Chai Lattes and Pumpkin Bread at Caribou are my all-time favorites!
Pumpkin Spice Oatmeal Pancakes from Perkins are divine

DIY Long Curtain Rod

There are benefits and drawbacks to having a huge window. When I mean huge, I'm not kidding - it's 11 feet wide. Technically it's three windows right next to each other, but's pretty massive.

  • Our apartment is full of wonderful, natural light
  • Good ventilation - we enjoy the breeze on spring-fall evenings
  • Decor - the window makes for a nice focal point in our living room
  • Puppy perks - one of Bear's favorite things to do is stare out the window

  • Too much sunlight - in the summer, our apartment gets unbearably hot
  • Window treatments - it's nearly impossible to find curtains/curtain rods that are big (and cheap) enough

Woes of Mid-Late Twenties

While 28 isn't a significant birthday that necessarily makes me want to cry or hate the world (although I'm dreading the next two years), there are still plenty of issues you have to deal with in your mid-late twenties:

1) You're always zapped of energy, and feel like doing this every day after work:
Or this:

2) You officially feel ridiculous shopping at Forever 21

Jim's Greatest Pranks on Dwight - The Office

One of the best TV show compilations ever. I couldn't get enough of the Jim/Dwight dynamic. Amazing.

Happy National Doughnut Day!

Today is a glorious holiday - it's National Doughnut Day! While I didn't celebrate this morning (because I forgot), I still want to recognize today because I love breakfast food...and doughnuts. At first, I thought this day was simply another marketing ploy by businesses like Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Doughnuts to hand out free food and get people in their stores, but the holiday actually has very noble beginnings.

Game Of Thrones Roundup

I am completely obsessed with Game of Thrones. It started with the TV show, and now I'm hooked on the books as well. I just cannot get enough. There wasn't a new episode last week which was rough, but with only two episodes left this season I'm anxiously awaiting Sunday night. I've come across many funny GOT internet memes, gifs, videos and images over the past year, so I thought I would do a roundup of some of my favorites.

New Food Blog Loves

I work in public relations, and sometimes our clients want us to reach out to influential bloggers to use their products in reviews, giveaways and recipes. Lucky me, I get to search for blogs that would be a good fit, and oftentimes I come across some deliciously good ones! Recently I stumbled upon three that I just HAD to share:

Weekend Treasures

As I said in my last post, I decided to venture out and go thrift store/antique shopping this weekend. I must say, I did pretty well! I actually ended up having the most success at the antique stores I visited - three of which were close to the Blue Door Pub in Saint Paul. Below are the treasures I found :)

I was excited to find these cute vintage kitchen items that I plan to use for a future craft project - they're the perfect size. Pictured here are a cheese grater, two cookie cutters, a melon scoop, and allspice tin. I especially love the bell cookie cutter because my mom has one just like it, and it reminds me of home and many childhood Christmas's of baking/decorating cookies.

Thrift Shop

I've been sick for over a week, spending most of that time stuck in the apartment. While I'm not quite feeling 100%, I've been itching to get out and about and do something....anything! What's a good way to cure cabin fever when the weather refuses to cooperate? Thrift store shopping! I get giddy going up and down the aisles, searching for things I can refurbish/bring back to life. I'm not necessarily into moccasins like Macklemore, but I do love a good book, furniture, picture frames, and other misc./random chotsky things I can spray paint and make pretty.

First Run of 2013 = Success

Is it really April already? How did that happen??
I let too much time slip away - I need to get caught up.
I ran my first 5k of 2013 on St. Patrick's Day.
It. Was. Ridiculously. Cold.
But I fought through...
the burning my lungs,
the chilled wind causing my nose to be a continuous faucet,
the bitter temperature.
And you know what? I accomplished my goal!
I set out to beat my last timed race, and I did!
My final time was 35:47 - 48 seconds faster than last time.
I want to continue improving that number throughout the rest of the year.

With the help of Pinterest, I decided to make a festive tutu for the run :)

Where are you springtime?

I am ready for spring.
I am sick of the cold.
I thought maybe if I decorated for spring, it would encourage Mother Nature to bring warmer temperatures.
Last summer I made a chalkboard from a thrift store frame and plywood, and I love switching it up to reflect the season. I also found smaller frames at garage sales, flea markets, etc. that I switch out as well.

Below is what I used for spring inspiration.

100% Chance for a Run

Tom and I are running the St. Patrick's Irish Tradition 5k around Lake Como this weekend. I came across the pin above, and thought it was fitting. Do you want to know what else there's a 100% chance of? That it'll be f&$% cold, and snow will still be on the ground...I looked up the forecast today and it's supposed to be 28 degrees with possible snow flurries.
I distinctly remember last year being a hot and balmy 79. What happened? Last year we did the Securian Winter Run which is in January. We decided to forgo the race this year, and wait for it to warm up. Because I was curious, I looked up what the temperature was on the day of that race. Guess what - it was 20 degrees.

A mere 8 degrees colder than the race we're going to be running in two days...two months later.

I love you Minnesota, I really do. But sometimes I seriously wonder why I live here.

Pin to Present - Rose Cake (and a valuable lesson)

Let's start off this post with a key takeaway I've learned recently:

Never try a new recipe the night before. Ever.

I know this may seem like a "duh" concept to many of you (and trust me when I say I know better), but for some reason I seem to think that if I try a new recipe, it will come out perfectly glorious on the first attempt.

I was in charge of making the cake for my great-grandma's 101st birthday. I'm going to be honest - even though I love to bake, I've never actually baked a cake from scratch before. Looking back, at least I had the sense not to try that...I'm sure it would have been an absolute fiasco.

Anyway, I had pinned this cake design months ago, so all i needed was a recipe. The week of the party I kept seeing Pinterest pins on how to make boxed cake mix taste homemade. Immediately my mind thought "AWESOME - this will be soooo easy!" Very rookie mistake my friends. Even though I found great suggestions on blogs like One Good Thing By Jillee, 366 Days of Pinterest, and even the Huffington Post, I had trouble finding an exact recipe that would work for the cake mix I had purchased.

She Doesn't Look a Day Over 90

She was born two months before the Titanic sank. She has lived through 18 presidents.
She, ladies and gentlemen, is my great-grandmother - Alice Bertha Grunewaldt.
Since she was born on leap day, she technically doesn't get a birthday this year. However, yesterday we celebrated her 101st birthday.

5 Things Friday

Happy Friday friends! I'm sure you're as ready for the weekend as I am. I also hope you all had a lovely Valentine's Day! This "5 Things Friday" post features five internet videos I've come across over the past couple of weeks that I really enjoy.

Bill Burr is one of my favorite comedians. The below clip explains why.

There's nothing I love more than goats. Well, maybe goats that yell like humans.

Crockpot Chicken Tacos

Photo on the left from, photo on the right by yours truly :)

I admit I'm not the best cook.
However, with the help of Pinterest (and, I'm slowly getting better.

Take this recipe for example:
- 1 pkg chicken breasts
- 1 packet of taco seasoning
- 16 oz. jar of salsa (I only had a 32 oz. jar on hand)

Low Cal French Toast

Part of this whole "live a healthier life" trip I've chosen to embark on means I have to reevaluate food.
Which is very difficult for me because:
  1. I've had a terrible diet my entire life.
  2. As you know, I'm a picky eater who hates pretty much every vegetable/healthy food out there.
  3. 90% of my high school meals involved peanut butter sandwiches and chips (in fact, my meals at work now consist of peanut butter sandwiches on a fairly regular basis).
  4. I don't do diets, I fail them quite easily - when I'm told I can't eat something, it just makes me want it more.
My solution? Figure out ways to make my favorite foods healthier.

I recently read an interview with Paula Deen who said, "deprivation isn't the key - moderation is." Coming from a woman whose mantra was "MORE BUTTER," I feel like I can relate to her (my mantra being "MORE SWEETS"). So while I'll be attempting to eat healthier, I'm not going to completely cut back on the sweets. Let's be real - I'd go crazy.

2013: MN Races

I finally sat down and went through all of the races happening in MN this year, and compiled a list.  Then, with Tom's help, we finalized that list, and I'm happy to share that below is what we're planning to take on! Last year we participated in the Securian Winter 5k in January (my first 5k ever - I finished at 36:35), Irish for a Day 5k (I actually didn't compete becuase I came down with a horribly awful cold), and the Color Run. This year, I wanted to not only increase the number of races, but also try my first 10k - it's one of my New Year's resolutions :)

2013 Resolutions

Well, the new year is here. Time to start fresh, become the better "you" you've always dreamed of, and make ridiculous resolutions that you'll never follow through with. Sorry - that's the pessimist in me coming out...but seriously, who actually accomplishes the resolutions they set at the beginning of the year? I know I never do. Yet I still set them every single year. So, I've decided that one of my resolutions this year is to follow through with all of my resolutions. If you want to know the others, they are as follows:

  1. Lose 20 pounds
  2. Run a 10k
  3. Eat lunch away from my desk at least 2x a week
  4. Read 42 books
  5. Limit frivolous spending

What about you - what goals, projects, reformed habits have you set for yourself in 2013?
